Driving with dementia

As we all know, the population is ever aging, and recent statistics have shown the majority of motor vehicle accidents happen in the elderly. This review in Neurology looks at a few characteristics to identify patients at increased risk for unsafe driving:

  • Clinical Dementia Rating scale
  • carer’s rating of patient’s driving ability as unsafe
  • history of crashes/traffic citations
  • self reported situation avoidance or reduced driving mileage
  • mMSE of 24 or less
  • Aggressive/impulsive personality characteristics
