Diagnosing diabetes with HbA1c

Diabetes is currently diagnosed on the basis of fasting plasma glucose and oral glucose tolerance tests, however this article from the BMJ tested the potential of using the HbA1c as a measure. 
The researchers found a HbA1c of 6.3% highly specific, with a sensitivity similar to that found with fasting glucose. Interesting idea, and certainly saves the hassle of waiting for a fast – is it reliable? Looks like an area for further study…
