Ten strikes and you’re out

Everyone knows some of the general risk factors for cerebrovascular disease and strokes, but the INTERSTROKE study has gone one step further and identified the top ten risk factors contributing to ischaemic stroke. Basically, if you want some targets to aim for to reduce stroke, these would be the ones to hit. 

The list:

  1. Hypertension
  2. Current smoking
  3. Waist to hip ratio
  4. Diet risk score
  5. Lack of regular physical activity
  6. Diabetes mellitus
  7. Alcohol intake
  8. Psychosocial stressors and depression
  9. Cardiac causes
  10. Ratio of apolipoproteins B to A1
