If you’re surgically minded, you’ll know that operations can be a quick, efficient solution to deadly problems as long as the right people and right tools are available – and there’s the problem. We all know that public health isn’t the same everywhere, and the same applies to operating theatres.
This article from a surgically themed Lancet clarifies this disparity – there’s one operating theatre spread across 100,000 people in sub Saharan Africa, but 25 for the same number in Europe. If you think you’re theatre list is full (or waiting times are long), then spare a thought for the third world.
