PICC lines are useful little devices – often used when IV administration is required in the long term, such as with prolonged courses of antibiotics. OF course, they aren’t without risk – infection being the common concern, but as with many vascular devices, thrombus can also pose a problem.
But how do you know which patient will get a DVT? Turns out that it’s not terribly difficult – the bigger the line, the more risk, as for patients who have had a previous DVT and those that are post operative.
