Need yet another reason to quit smoking, beyond the risk of cancer, emphysema and vascular disease? It looks like brain is the next end organ to suffer, as this new study from the Archives of Internal Medicine shows:
Looking at over 21,000 patients, who initially were surveyed in the late 70s and early 80s, they found that those patients who smoked more than 2 packs a day had over twice the risk of non-smokers of developing dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.
Some patients are happy to keep smoking in the view that they’d rather have a shorter life but get to keep smoking – that view would probably change if they knew they might end up demented for the last years of their life. Something more to discuss for those people trying to quit – read it for yourself over here.
