Although the mortality rate would be exceptionally low, the common cold is something almost every single one of us have dealt with at some point. Until now, standard treatment has been pretty ineffective – keep your fluids up, take some rest – but maybe zinc has a role to play.
Although varying treatments such as vitamin C and echinacea have been mentioned before, this Cochrane review found that zinc administered within the first 24 hours reduces both the severity and duration of the cold. The studies, which included 966 participants in total, were fairly heterogenous and the dose of zinc hasn’t been established, and the general side effects were bad taste and nausea.
