Look closer

Simple microscopy is an relatively old technique that we still rely heavily on in the modern era. Ask any lab haematologist and beyond all the flow cytometry and machines, the blood film can still give a huge amount of information. Not everywhere in the world has such easy access – wouldn’t it be great if you could just whip your phone out to look at the film? What’s more, you could then send it to a lab and get a result all in one go…

The CellScope, from the guys at Berkeley, is a groundbreaking invention that turns your average mobile phone camera into a microscope, with a magnification up to 50x. It’s an old technology in a totally new way – and one that could revolutionise diagnosis in the field. The idea has been around for a few years now and is becoming more and more prominent.

Review a film anywhere you like – and there are countless more uses to come, particularly in the developing world. Check out their fantastic work, here
