The legal world and the medical world are becoming increasingly entwined, as people learn more and more about their own health, from both reliable and misleading resources. Commonly, we make the assumption that the obstetricians and gynaecologists face the most malpractice claims – but it looks like its the surgeons who have to watch out.
This article from the NEJM no less compares 25 specialties and lists the number of claims made, and proportionally looks at the number of those given in favour of the plaintiff (a minority in most cases). Almost 1 in 5 neurosurgeons face some sort of complaint, and 99% of physicians in ‘high-risk’ specialties face a claim by age 65.
