If it’s up, your risk is down

Erectile dysfunction – an area that men rarely likely to talk about, but one that has been thrust into the light recently with more effective pharmacological therapies. There are many causes beyond the primary pyschological however, with vascular risk factors also playing a role. With that noted then, is ED a risk factor for cardiovascular disease?

Sit up and take note – it most definitely is. This study from JACC looked at 12 prospective cohort studies comprising over 36,000 patients, and found that the combined relative risk was 1.46 for coronary artery disease, and 1.35 for stroke. In fact, it was 1.19 for all cause mortality.

Yet another reason to take that complete history, and not to ignore that elephant in the room. Article is here.
