The focus has been on Japan for all the wrong reasons recently, after the recent nuclear disaster. Prior to that though, the Japanese population had been heavily studied to understand just how they have the longest life expectancy in the world – and this series from the Lancet tries to find out why.
Genetics? Public health? Financial status?
Whatever it is, because of the ageing population, Japan is about to face a problem that the whole world is catching up on – dealing with that elderly group. The increasing burden on the healthcare system and residential care over there will provide a model for the rest of us to carefully watch.
